William H. Stubbs Jr.

William H Stubbs, Jr., 91, of Cranston, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday June 2, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Cranston, he was the son of the late William H Stubbs, Sr. and Estina Ann (Greene). Predeceased by “the love of his life”, for 49 years, Helen I. (Greene) Stubbs, and both of his sisters, Florence (Stubbs) Kingsley formerly of Cranston and Ruth Mathewson formerly of Pembroke, MA. He was a highly skilled prototype Tool & Die Maker for the Gorham Manufacturing Co. and Bostich. A devoted family man, he is survived by 2 sons, Jared and David Stubbs, 4 daughters Janet Brode, Judith Dalnas, Beverly Yonkers, Mary Jane Ragland; 16 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. He served in the US Navy during WWII as a machinist mate in the PT Boats Base 17 and saw action at Leyte Gulf and Samar Island. He enriched his family’s lives with annual tent camping vacations, all six children and a dog in tow, initiating the first adventure to Mt Monadnock, NH, drying baby Mary-Jane’s diapers over the campfire. Each annual adventure was preplanned to incorporate a saturation of geography and history lessons to his children. There was not a public park, museum, or point of interest missed… all before the days of GPS and Google! He restored two sunken Old Town canoes and added the element of family paddles through the Great Swamp, and any other waterway feasible. During his retired years he was active in PT Boat veteran’s activities, playing bocce, and bowling. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 11:00am in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice Care of Rhode Island.
