Francis F. Szlatenyi

Szlatenyi, Francis F. "Fred" age 97, of Coventry passed on August 5. He was the husband of Laurena (Sherman). They were to celebrate 67 years of marriage on October 26. Born in Cranston on January 20, 1915 he was the son of Stephen and Mary (Bako) Szlatenyi. He was the brother of the late Mary (Tillet), Anthony "Tuffy", Helen (Cleverly), and Charles "Steve" Szlatenyi. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children Gene and his wife Sally of Virginia., Paula (Frost) of Florida, Freda and her husband Marc Hamelin of Coventry, and Leah Szlatenyi of East Greenwich, 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He also was the father of a newborn son, Karl, who died shortly after birth. He was a veteran of WWII, a master sergeant for the army/air force specializing as a master airplane & engine mechanic, and a rifle/carbine marksman. He served in England, Belgium, France, and Germany. He worked for many years for Copters Unlimited at Hillsgrove. A private funeral was held at Butterfield Home and Chapel; a military honor burial took place at the RI Veteran's cemetery on Thursday, August 9th.
