Margaret M. Herne
Herne, Margaret M. "Peggy" 88, of Cranston passed away Monday December 14, 2015 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center with her family at her side. She was the wife of the late Joseph S. Herne and is survived by her sister Marie Cole of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, son Mike Herne and caregiver Elaine Holleran of Pawtucket, granddaughter Megan Herne of Newport and grandson Paul Herne of Providence. She is also survived by her niece Kathy Roseen of Wolfeboro, New Ham[shire and nephew Bob Cole of St. Albans, Vermont. Born in Amesbury, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Artimage) Burke. She moved to Cranston in 1955 when her husband Joe became the Band Director at Cranston High School. She spent the following 25 years as the ultimate Band Booster and Band Parent. In addition she was a Crossing Guard for the City of Cranston for many years. Besides being a mother and grandmother, she was a devoted catholic and was very involved in St. Matthew Church where she spent many years as a member of the Alter Guild. She was the first female Eucharistic Minster in the parish and in her later years continued to remind everyone she was a Catholic. After retirement she and Joe enjoyed many years of camping across the county in their motor home including a memorable 3 month drive to Alaska and back. They spent time in 48 of the 50 states. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 5:00-8:00pm in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00am in St. Matthew Church (corners of Park and Elmwood Avenues) Cranston. A private burial will be held at the family plot in Haverhill, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Hope Alzheimer’s Center 25 Brayton Avenue Cranston, RI 02920.
