Gertrude L. Barker
Barker, Gertrude Leah (Crandall), a resident of Scandinavian Home in Cranston, died Monday August 8, 2011. She was the loving wife of the late Chester N. Barker and the daughter of the late George and Blanche (Crawford) Crandall. Gertrude was born in New London, Connecticut and lived in East Providence for over 33 years before moving to Cranston in 1959. She had worked in the statistical department of Manufacturers Mutual Insurance (now Allendale Insurance of Johnston RI). She was an active member of St. David’s On The Hill Episcopal Church for over 36 years. She was a charter member of the Philathia Class of The Haven United Methodist Church of East Providence, a member of the Diocese of Providence Cursillo Movement Class of 1942, Cranston Senior Center, and the AARP Cranston Chapter. She stayed active all her life. She loved flowers, cooking, traveling, music, and most of all the Church. Gertrude is survived by her two step-daughters, Linda Perkins and Carol Gates. She was pre-deceased by her step-children Susan Decatur & Chester “Chet” Barker. She is also survived by her brother William Crandall of Atlanta, GA, 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, 3 nieces, 2 great nieces and 2 great nephews. The funeral will be held on Saturday at 8:45am from The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston followed by a Funeral Sevice at 10:00am in St. Davids On The Hill Episcopal Church 200 Meshanticut Valey Parkway Cranston. Burial will follow in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00-7:00pm. In lieu of flowers contributions to the music enrichment fund of St. David’s would be appreciated.
