Dorothea E. "Dot" Walsh

Dorothea E. (Martin) Walsh 95, of Providence died peacefully Wednesday July 5th as she lived – surrounded by the loving family that was the most important part of her life. She was the wife of the late Albert A. Walsh and the proud mother of their four daughters, Eileen Walsh Butterfield, Dorothy Walsh Silva, Maureen Walsh O’Sullivan and Anne Walsh. She was also a second mother to many, especially to the “fifth sister” Michaela O’Neill Geary. Born in Providence, Dot was the daughter of the late Margaret Helen and Albert Martin. She was the sister of the late Helen McBurnie, Albert Martin, Mary Proulx, Gertrude Appleton and is survived by her sister Margaret Perreault.

Like her mother, Dot was well known as a strong, smart, sensitive woman and raised her girls to be the same, but each in her own unique way. She delighted in her grandchildren, Raymond Butterfield, Jennifer Silva Brees, Michelle Butterfield Fontaine, Rachel Silva, Suzanne Butterfield Chase and Conor Walsh. She reveled in her role as great-grandmother to their children, Emily, Fatima, Ray, Brandon, Bernadette, Natalie, Matthew, Ryan and Curtis.

Born into the Assumption Parish in Providence, Dot and Al raised their children in St. Matthew Parish in Cranston where they all attended St. Matthew School. She was also a past President of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus Cranston Council 1738 and a member of the Daughters of Isabella. Family, friends and even perfect strangers enjoyed talking with her. She might not know you at the beginning of a conversation, but she’d be as kind, attentive and responsive as if you were her best friend. This ability served her well during the years that she was a very popular Dance Teacher at local community and senior centers and a member of Dance Masters of America.

Dot was woman of great heart and presence who had a story everywhere she went. She will be deeply and dearly missed.

Funeral services will be held on Monday July 10th at 8:30am from The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Matthew Church Cranston at 10:00am. Burial will follow in the Rhode Island Veteran Cemetery Exeter. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00-6:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations to the Mary House 244 Smith Street Providence, RI 02908 would be appreciated.

Mrs. Walsh was like a second Mom to me. Loved her spirit and her sense of humor. I have so many sweet memories of growing up around her and "Dad Walsh". Her giving us rides to school, her baking after school, both her and Mr. Walsh spending time at our house on Sinclair Avenue and also at our house at the Cape with my own Mom and Dad...and who could ever forget her great "Can-Can" performance at St. Matthew Minstrel Show?! She was one in a million and she will be sadly missed by so many who all wanted her to live forever. I'm so glad I got to spend time with her recently on several occasions. My Mom and Dad loved her and Mr. Walsh too. I like to think they are all hanging out together and reminiscing about old times. Rest in peace, "Mom Walsh", you will always be remembered with a smile.

My heart aches for the family who lost this amazing lady. Dot's delight and keen attention upon seeing you was like a blanket of love that she cast on everyone she encountered. Maureen, I hope your immense sorrow will be eased a bit knowing that your Dad has his "best girl" with him again. Love, prayers and hugs to all the Walsh girls.

Ed and Maureen Chase, Aiken, SC - 07/09/2017

We were sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs. Walsh. What a wonderful, kind, and cheerful woman! We probably knew her a little over 10 years and she always greeted us as if we were lifelong friends....she always remembered the names of our family members and always asked about them. Dale is so fortunate to have married into such a wonderful family; and I know they will miss their Mother, Grandmother, and GreatGrandmother. Our thoughts and prayers are sent to the Butterfield family at this very sad time.l

Ana - 08/02/2017

Our deepest and sincerest condolences to the family. Words alone can not ease the pain when grieving the loss of a love one. The Bible provides comfort during these difficult times. Revelation 21:3-4 states, "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away". May God give you and your family comfort in your loving memories and in His promise that soon we will never experience losing our loved ones in death and we will be able to see them again once they resurrected as per John 5:28-29. May these words give you a new hope, with deepest sympathy and warmth of heart.
