Donna S.Taft

Donna S. Taft of Cranston, RI passed away peacefully at home on Saturday August 12, 2017 after a long term illness and courageous battle. She was surrounded until the very end by family and friends.

Daughter of the late John B. and Lillian (Marley) Sandberg, she grew up in Warwick and was a graduate of Warwick Veterans High School and later attended the former Boston Secretarial School. She worked for 45 years in Providence first as the office manager at Ophthalmology Inc. and later as surgical coordinator at the RI Eye Institute until her retirement in 2006.

Besides her loving husband of 55 years, David W. Taft, Donna is survived by her children Michaela Doubrava and her husband Edward of Narragansett, Dr. David R. Taft and his wife Molly of Fairhaven NJ and Kristen Chase of Cranston. A loving grandmother known as “grandma donna” she is also survived by eight grandchildren, Kyle, Corey and Brett Doubrava, Bailey, Carter and Reilly Taft and Madeline and Hannah Chase.

Donna will be remembered as a selfless person. She often spent her lunch breaks caring for elderly patients who didn’t have family. She was famous for allowing her home on Norman Avenue to be the neighborhood house where so many kids had their second home. Donna was an amazing cook and baker, bowled in leagues with her friends and enjoyed trips to the casino! An animal lover and advocate her whole life, she will be missed by her three dogs Harley, Hazel and Gus.

Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Tuesday August 15, 2017 from 4:00-7:00pm in the Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Wednesday August 16, 2017 in St. Kevin Church 333 Sandy Lane Warwick. Burial will be private at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Hope Hospice and Palliative Care of RI 1085 North Main Street Providence, RI 02904 in her memory would be appreciated.

Dear Mr. Taft and family,

On behalf of my mother, Catherine, and myself, I offer our deepest sympathy to all of you for your loss. My mother is a long-time patient at RI Eye Institute; Donna was always exceptionally kind and helpful to my mother, assisting her with appointments, etc. Donna's concern and helpfulness were clearly genuine, and we always appreciated the warm human touch that Donna provided, which is a rare trait these days in most large medical practices. Again, we extend our sincere condolences. We shall keep Donna in our thoughts and prayers.
