Thomas F. Kane Jr.

Kane, Thomas F. Jr., of Cranston passed away Friday, April 15th, surrounded by the love of family and dear friends. He was the son of the late Thomas F. Kane Sr. and Doris M . (Ellerbeck) Kane. He was a loving husband to wife Donna and an exceptionally devoted father and friend to his daughter Meghan and son Thomas. He is also survived by his brother Stephen and sister-in-law Lorraine, six nieces and nephews, brother-in-law Joseph Earley, close family friend Robin Lynch, and Richard Smith, Tom’s best friend of over 50 years. He was predeceased by his sisters Paula M. Earley and Barbara J. Kane. Tom was an educator in the Cranston Public Schools for 31 years, first as an elementary and special education teacher and then as a guidance counselor. During the latter part of his tenure he served as Chair of the Guidance Department at Western Hills Middle School. He touched the lives of countless students with his genuine concern for their well-being and achievement. He was a loyal member of the Jamestown Penguin Club for 27 years. Each year on New Year’s Day he waded into the frigid waters of Mackeral Cove, accompanied by his daughter, son, and nephews to benefit Special Olympics. In 1996, as Excelsior, he had the privilege of leading his fellow penguins with whom he enjoyed a special bond. He shared with his son an interest in antique cars, attending countless car shows as well as owning a variety of makes and models. To know Tom was to be in the company of a man of utmost integrity, compassion and wit. He approached all aspects of his life with a firm sense of commitment and a determination to find humor even in difficult situations. His funeral will be held on Tuesday April 26th at 8:45am from The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Matthew Church 15 Frances Avenue Cranston at 10:00am. Over the 15+ years that the average person spends as a student, there are always a small handful of educators that stand out amongst the many. Mr. Kane was one of those precious few for me. I was always impressed by how he could find a way to relate to every student. We used to have conversations as if we were life-long friends, and I was barely 13! I will always remember him as a man that I could confide in and look up to. My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Kane family during this tough time.

Jioanne DiBona - 04/25/2011

Memebers of the Kane Family, I am very sorry to learn of "MR KANES'S PASSING. My association with TOM began at westen hills jr high when my son john was a student there and was found in grade 7 to have a learning disability which had gone undetected and as his guidance counselor he took more than the GUIDANCE COUNSELOR INTEREST IN HIM. When I showed him the picture and he read it the FIRST THING HE SAID WAS MR. KANE WAS THE RIRST PERSON WHO TOLD ME TO BELEIVE IN MY DREAM OF WANTING TO BECOME A SPORTBROADCASTER AND AS LONG AS I ALWAYS COULD SAY THAT IDID MY BEST AND TRIED MY HARDEST I WOULD SUCCEED. My son is 30 a college graduate and even though he isnt in sports (still his Dream) he works in District Court system using his communications degree and your fathers words have stayed with hm all these years. My own thought of MR KANE is when idid volunteer work at the jr high and on ST. PATRICKS day made IRISH BREAD and brought it into share with the office staff. I continued his traditon of bringing him his own loaf even after my son had left westrn hills. I am truly sorry for your loss of such a great man and although i intended on paying my respects to him i have had a death in my own immediate family that prevents me from doing this.. he was truly a great man, agood friend and dedicated teacher to those students who were fortunate to have his guidance.

Anne Smith - 04/25/2011

I am sorry for your loss. Tom and I were classmates at St.Matthew's.It was wonderful to read the many tributes posted here to him, I hope you will find comfort in them.I live out of state, so will not be able to atttend his service.

Nancy Garnett-Thomas - 04/25/2011

What a shock to hear of Tom's passing. What a vibrantly funny and charming man he was......and his office FULL of photos of his cars!!!!!! I'll never forget his mischievous grin and his absolutel love for his family. Thinking of you at this time.

Jackie Venticinque (Correra) - 04/25/2011

To the Kane Family,
I want to extend my deepest condolences to all of you on the loss of such a great man. I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Kane back in 1972, when he became my 5th grade student teacher at Stadium School in Cranston. He was just so talented, and was a person who was always fair, and had a way of getting across to young students. After many years I had the opportunity of running into to him at our Church "St. Matthews", it was so good to talk with him, and the best part of our meeting was he actually remembered me by name; as one of his students. That to me is a gift that he had. I know he will be missed, by all who knew him.
May God give you the strength, and courage to get through this most difficult time. You can be assured that you have an angel watching over you now, and may he rest in peace with the Lord. So long Mr. Kane it was wonderful to have met you in my lifetime. With Deepest Sympathy

Paula Moran - 04/26/2011
