Donald R. Murphy

Donald Rickard Murphy, 86, of Edgewood, died peacefully, October 16, in Hospice Care of Rhode Island, surrounded by his loving family. Donald was the beloved husband of Dorothy L. Murphy. He was born September 30, 1929, in Providence. He was the son of Agnes B. Murphy (Ferguson). Donald was a businessman and owned several businesses in Providence, Cranston, and Warwick. Donald is survived by his wife Dorothy of 63 years, his children: daughter Linda Brisco and husband Leonard of Pacific Palisades, California; son Donald Murphy, Jr. and his wife Laurie of Coventry; daughter Susan Hassard and husband David of Ashaway; son Stephen Murphy (deceased); son Kenneth Murphy of North Smithfield; and son Gregory Murphy and his wife Jodi of North Kingstown, his grandchildren; Laurel Norris, Tara Brisco, Stephanie Ferreira, Lisa Corrigan, Jared Hassard, Justin, Kyla, and Bradley Murphy, Kevin, Brian, Meaghan, and Sean Murphy, Matthew, Stephen, and Patrick Murphy, his great grandchildren: Jasmine, Vincent and Hazel Ferreira, and Boston and Sienna Norris. Donald went to Classical High School and Bowdoin College where he was a track and field star. He served in the Air force and is a veteran. He was a courageous leader in all he did. When he was young, Donald was an Eagle Scout and worked summers at Yawgoog Boy Scout camp. He was a Scout Master of Troop 8 in Cranston. He started his business career as a business salesman for Atlantic Richfield. He followed his dream to be a business owner and opened Boulevard Service Station at the end of Blackstone Boulevard. He ran this station for years, and ran other stations, as well, in Cranston and Warwick. He briefly taught auto mechanics at Seekonk High School. He and wife Dorothy were members of the Friendly Mixers Square/Round Dance Club and traveled around New England with their group. He was a member of the Mason’s Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. Donald loved spending time at the beach with his wife and family, and sailing on Narragansett Bay. They also enjoyed parties with the family at their beach house. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 10:00am in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston. Burial will follow in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery 6365 Post Road North Kingstown. Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 4:00-7:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island 1085 North Main Street Providence, RI 02904
