John S. Leonard

John S. Leonard 87, of Earl Street, Warwick, died May 26, 2016 at Kent County Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Leonard held various positions in manufacturing in the area, but his first love was his music, where he played piano for many local orchestras, and later, as an entertainer at events and in several area nursing homes. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy and Brown University. He was the husband of Edith Tiedge Leonard. They had been married for 61 years. He was born May 27, 1928 in Providence, the son of the late John P. and Grace (Carmody) Leonard. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters; Carol J. Ward, and her husband, Thomas V. Ward, of Cumberland, R.I.; and Linda L. Kushner, and her husband, Andrew L. Kushner, of Sharon, Mass. He had eight grandchildren including Michaela C. Kellogg, Katelyn M. McMorrow, and Kristen E. and Steven T. Ward. Also, Samuel L., Meredith J., Rita M. and Erik C. Kushner. He also had one great-grandson, Benjamin Kellogg. Survivors also include his brothers; Ronald Leonard, and his wife Norma, of Los Angeles; and William Leonard and his wife, Merlyn, of Warwick. He was pre-deceased by brothers Alfred, Thomas, and Richard Leonard; and his sister, Grace Pariseault. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday May 31st at 11:00am in St. Gregory the Great Church 360 Cowesett Road in Warwick. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery in Cranston. Visitation to which family and friends are invited will be held on Tuesday morning prior to the Funeral Mass beginning at 9:00am in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Church of the Ascension 390 Pontiac Avenue Cranston, RI 02910.
