Walter Behm Sr.

Walter Behm Sr., 96, of Cranston peacefully passed away at home on October 27, 2018 of natural causes. Walter lived in Rhode Island all his life and was self-employed for the greater part of his working life. He loved working and worked well into his 90's.

Walter was the son of the late Frederick and Annie (Stewart) Behm and was born and raised in Providence. Walter had 4 brothers, Charlie, Harold, Harry and Ernest and 3 sisters, Veronica, Helen Dixon, and Virginia Belanger who have all preceded him in death. He has one surviving sister, Gertrude Farman.

Walter is survived by his soulmate, Doris Eva Louise (Richford) Behm whom he married almost 77 years ago on November 7, 1941 when he was 19 and she was 16. Together they had 5 children. Walter Behm Jr. (Maureen), Marilyn Behm, Donna Saccoccia (Benjamin), Ricky Behm (Paula). Sadly his daughter and son in law Cheryl and Eric Curt preceded him in death. Walter loved being a Grandpa (Pops) and had 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.

For the better part of 70 years Walter was in the scrap metal business. He was ahead of his time and made a life of recycling before it was even heard of. For a time Walter had a junk yard in the Fox Point area of Providence. He and Doris worked side by side making a comfortable life for their family.

Visitation will be held on Thursday morning from 10:00 am-12:00 noon in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac avenue Cranston. Prayers of Remembrance will be offered at 11:30.

The family would like to express deep appreciation for the Hospice nurses and aides that helped take care of their father and grandpa. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to your local Hospice.
