Louis A. Colantonio MD

Louis Anthony Colantonio, MD, 76, of Cumberland RI passed away unexpectedly on February 2, 2019. He was the best friend and husband of 53 years to Jo-Ann (Stubbs). He is survived by his loving children David Colantonio, Esq and Marisa Bettencourt and her husband, David. He was the beloved Nonno to his 3 grandsons, Andrew, Joseph, and David, Jr of whom he was very proud. He is also survived by his brother Gaetano (Susan), and sister Carmella (Steve), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends both in the US and Italy. He will be deeply missed.

Louis was a 1960 Graduate of LaSalle Academy, 1964 graduate of Providence College and received his medical degree from the University of Bologna, Italy. He was the first physician at Rhode Island Hospital to complete a straight 3 year Pediatric internship/residency. He was on the staff of Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Hospital, and Women and Infants. Louis had a thriving pediatric practice in northern Rhode Island for 45 years and touched the lives of many families with his attention to detail and genuine care for the wellbeing of all the children who came to see him. He left a special mark on the community that will not soon be forgotten.

Louis loved Italy and anything Italian. He shared this affinity with all around him and loved to tell stories about when he and Jo-Ann lived there with no money during medical school in the ‘60s and how they were the best years of their lives. Born in Providence, he was the first American born son of Thomas and Evelyn (Fraioli). He maintained lifelong friendships with “the guys from Italy” and was blessed to have a decades long, best friendship with John Marcello and his wife Margie.

Louis was a humble and loyal man who lived his life with intention and love for his family, friends, and patients. He will be deeply missed.

A Memorial Celebration of Life Service to which all are invited to attend will be held on Saturday March 9th at 1:00pm in the Cornerstone Church 1990 Elmwood Avenue Warwick, RI 02888.

Dear Jo Ann, David and Marisa,
We are so sorry and saddened to hear about Dr. C’s passing. We will be forever grateful for all the care he gave to our girls for the past 12 and a half years. There were times I’d be at Hasbro in the middle of the night with one of them and he would make sure he spoke to me on the phone before we left (one time at 3am) and would always tell me to drive home safe before we hung up. Dave and I learned so much from him and knew our girls were in good hands in his care. Thank you for everything and sharing him with us. Praying for you all during this difficult time. May he Rest In Peace.
Love,
Carolyn and David Sanders (Jessica and Samantha)

Joann and family,
Dear JoAnn and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Colantonio's passing. Dr. Colantonio was always so good to Graham and was always available to care for him when needed - which in the beginning of Graham's life was often. He always was willing to see him and help me and Jon to help our son. When our daughter Alison was born, he continued to be the best pediatrician ever. We have thought about him so many times during our children's lives and will continue to hold him in our thoughts forever.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time!

Richard Greco, MD - 02/10/2019

To the family of Dr. Colantonio. I extend my deepest sympathy. Lou and I have been friends and colleagues since 1971 when he and I did our pediatric residencies together at Rhode island Hospital. He was a great resident to work alongside with and I can attest to his excellent pediatric skills and kind interactions with the children and parents he was involved with at the Potter Building, the early forerunner of the Hasbro Children's Hospital. We both went into separate private practices after residency, but we continued to stay in close contact, sharing experiences and learning from each other. I have nothing but praise and respect for the kind of pediatrician he exemplified. I can understand the sadness felt by his patients and families who have been in his care over the many years. I consider myself very honored and fortunate to have considered Lou a good friend. My heart goes out to his family.

Lois Kilsey - 02/10/2019

Jo-Ann

JoAnn, David and Marisa, I'm so sorry for your loss. Dr. Colantonio was a dedicated, caring and supportive doctor to Marissa and to us as well. He always took the time to listen and provide guidance. He cared deeply for all patients. I also enjoyed our conversations about his special car. . . wanting a ride. . . and sharing pics of my special car a couple of years ago with him. You are all in my thoughts and prayers ❤❤❤

Pat Feinstein - 02/10/2019

Dear Mrs. Colantonio and family,

Please accept my sincere condolences.
I met Lou during his early years when he did a rotation at Bradley Hospital with Dr. Jack Farley and had contacts through the years because of our mutual patients. He was always kind and caring toward everyone.
I will miss him.

With Warm and Comforting Thoughts,

Pat Feinstein

I cannot express my sadness for you and your family. Dr C was a trusted advisor to my girls and I since my oldest daughter was born. He is will never be replaced in our hearts as no one can live up to his standard of care. May God love and bless you during this difficult time.

Allie and Mike Goldman - 02/11/2019

Joann and Family,
We are so very sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. C. When I ever called to make a sick visit for Leah and brought her to the on-call and was given this information I cried. I called Mom crying, Michaela cried, Abby cried, we all cried. The care given to my girls these past 7years was impecible and we cannot even begin to fathom the idea of having another pediatrician, as none will ever compare to him. We cannot even begin to thank the both of you enough, for not only ensuring my girls received the absolute best care regardless of time of day etc, but also saving my sisters life and allowing me the chance to grow and gain an amazing relationship with her over the years. May Dr. C rest in peace and may you all know how amazing, cherished, and important he was to our family ❤
