Jean Swanson Westcott
Jean Swanson Westcott 71, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2019 surrounded by her family. She was born to Bill and Marilyn Swanson on March 15, 1948 and grew up in Cranston, Rhode Island with her brother Robert Swanson. Jean was married to Edward "Ted" Westcott for 51 years. Her three daughters and their husbands are Carolyn & Hans Franzen, MaryEllen & John Halloran, Julie & Mark Sanderson. Jean was a devoted grandmother to eight grandchildren: Natalie and Nina, John, Vince and Sophie, Ben, Kate and Abby.
Jean trusted in Christ as her personal Savior and loved the teachings of the Bible and the fellowship of her church family - Cranston Christian Fellowship. She was joyful with her church and an active congregant who served as a greeter and cared for toddlers and babies.
Jean was adventurous and generous. In the 80's Jean and Ted built their sailboat Dawn Treader in the backyard, sold their house, moved aboard, and home-schooled their teenage daughters in the Bahamas. She and Ted moored Dawn Treader nearby at Edgewood Yacht Club where together they’d race, enjoy friends, and help others learn how to sail.
Ted was Jean’s high school sweetheart. They liked to be together all of the time. They even shared a cell phone for ten years, not seeing the need for two. Their daughters recently talked them into each having their own cell phones (“use them like walkie-talkies”).
Jean loved being part of a team. She wanted to be a part of everything; not just the graduations and birthdays, but the plumbing and moving projects too. Each daughter, and many friends had both Ted and Jean helping on key home improvement projects - always giving, always happy to help, always working to complete the project. If it was near the end of the day, it wasn't time to call it quits, it was "Let's finish the job!" from Jean. Many a bathroom, kitchen, deck, and stair tread has been installed not just as a job, but as a gift of love from Ted and Jean.
In 1998, Jean suffered a life-threatening traumatic brain injury. With tremendous personal drive, overwhelming support from family, friends and healthcare professionals, and faith in Jesus Christ, Jean recovered.
We were all blessed with twenty-one additional years of Jean’s adventurous spirit, generous heart, and desire to be with - and bring together - those that she loved.
Visitation and a Memorial Service will both be held on Saturday September 14th in the Cranston Christian Fellowship Church 1114 Scituate Avenue Cranston, RI 02921. Visitation will be from 5:00-6:00pm followed by the Memorial Service at 6:00pm. Refreshments to follow.

It's been an honor to have known Jean and Ted through my uncle Jimmy. They were devoted to helping him with any need he had. They took him to church every Sunday they were able, then picked him up afterward and all went to lunch. There wasn't anything they wouldn't do for their friend, my uncle Jimmy. He is heartbroken over loosing his close friend. I am heartbroken that this world will be without Jean in it. Jean your reward is great. I wait until we meet again. My condolences to you Ted and your family!

It's difficult to find the words in our language that can speak to the vastness of feelings brought by the loss of your beautiful Mom, Jean. You are in my thoughts and prayers and my heart aches for your loss.

Ted and family,
My heartfelt condolences to all of you.
Jean was a wonderful caring woman. She always met me with a smile and interest in my family as she spoke with pride of hers. Over the 25 years that I've delivered your mail I have come to view you not as a patron but as a friend in fact as family. You will be sorely missed. Rest in peace.

Jean was a wonderful friendly light at Edgewood Yacht Club. We met Jean as new members and she brought us into the fold. She was interested in our lives. She was happy for our sailing. We saw Jean with Ted in their boat going sailing almost every weekend. They'd always wave, smile, and say hi. It was wonderful to see Jean and Ted always together having adventures. Jean brought a lot of happiness into our world, even though we really only barely knew her. Jean was a wonderful person. Our deepest condolences to Ted and family.
Laura Sorensen - 09/11/2019
Jean was always a shining, buoyant, cheerful light (and she still is!).
To me, she was the very definition of contentedness.
She and Ted would greet me every Sunday at the door of CCF, and, like just about everyone else, I'm sure, I saw both of them as beautiful, inseparable partners. I certainly aspire to have a relationship like theirs with my husband.
Jean, I will deeply miss your tall elegance and your charming smile, but I know you're doing wonderfully where you are now. xoxoxoox
Elizabeth Willett - 09/11/2019

Dear Ted and family: The words of Jean's obituary so eloquently captured the essence of who she was. I never met anyone so loving, giving and determined. Her spirit was incredible and together, Ted and Jean, made a formidable team. My heartfelt condolences for your loss. Her recovery from the biking accident was miraculous, as was her life. Peace and comfort to all of you.

We are heartbroken for your loss, Ted, and that of all of your family and friends who share the gift of knowing Jean. Together with Jean you welcomed us into the family at EYC, starting a cherished lifelong friendship. Jean had a childlike exhuberance and zest for life, always looking for joy at every turn and in every person that was truly contagious. Her deep belief in Christian love shown through in her compassion and generosity, and her devotion to you, dear Ted, and her family. May the life you shared bring you comfort, holding Jean's Spirit close always. Love, Jacqueline and Bob
